My sciences glossary

20 Sciences terms

Hi, my name is Dylan Desjardins. I live in Saint-Eustache. I have been studying Sciences for 1 year at Lionel-Groulx College. My field of of study is chemistry, physics and biology. The glossary that I have made could be useful for the students already in chemistry, physics and biology. Also, this glossary could help the new students in this field of study. Indeed, each word in this glossary is related to the notions of chemistry, physics and biology. These words are often used in the field of science and help to better understand the concept of this program.

Acceleration
Noun
the act or process of moving faster or happening more quickly : the act or process of accelerating.
Example: The beauty of this model is that it needs a period of extended acceleration in order for it to occur, and hence answers the problem of the standard inflationary theory.
fr: Accélération
A graph of an acceleration
Analysis
Noun
Detailed examination of the elements or structure of something.
Example: This meant that Bohr's model of the atom and analysis of spectral lines could lead to the prediction and discovery of unknown elements.
fr: Analyse
An analysis
Atom
Noun
An extremely small amount of a thing or quality.
Example: I shall not have one atom of strength left.
fr: Atome
An atom
Beaker
Noun
a large drinking cup or glass with a wide mouth. contents of a beaker.
Example: For improvement, ideally is to have the scale placed beneath the beaker while water emerging, thus will be able to record the immediate water mass with minimum loss through evaporation.
fr: Bécher
A beaker
ecosystem
Noun
biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Example: Should the wrong gene "escape" into the environment, the ecosystem of the local area, and potentially that of the entire planet, could be irrevocably altered.
fr: Écosystème
An ecosystem
electricity
Noun
a form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles (such as electrons or protons), either statically as an accumulation of charge or dynamically as a current.
Example: It is an easy model to understand (ie it is an easy picture and can therefore be used to explain various atomic processes and some useful concepts in electricity.
fr: Électricité
electric poles
Energy
Noun
Power derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources, especially to provide light and heat or to work machines.
Example: As an alternative, a basic understanding of gait choice might be obtained by calculating energy cost by using mechanics-based models.
fr: Énergie
An energy
Experiment
Noun
a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact.
Example: Screening is a multi stage process as it can only provide information on whether or not one specific drug is present within a sample during a single experiment.
fr: Expérience
An experiment
Gravity
Noun
the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.
Example: This means that the string theory may provide the answer to the graviton and ultimately the holy grail of the Grand Unified Theory in which all forces (gravity, Electromagnetic and the weak and strong nuclear forces) are linked together.
fr: Gravité
The gravity in space
Lab coat
Noun
A loose-fitting usually white coat with deep pockets that is worn in a laboratory or medical facility.
Example: Hydrochloric acid Corrosive 25% Sodium hydroxide solution Corrosive Precautions: Appropriate lab wear; lab coat; goggles; gloves.
fr: Sarrau
A lab coat
Laboratory
Noun
a room or building equipped for scientific experiments, research, or teaching, or for the manufacture of drugs or chemicals.
Example: Flakes of paint are often sent into an analytical laboratory for examination as these are a common evidence type found at a scene, so can therefore provide valuable evidence to help link an individual to a crime, and because dried paint is partially crystalline with the pigments and extenders being crystalline and the matrix they are held within being non-crystalline XRD can be used to help analyse them.
fr: Laboratoire
An experiment in a laboratory
Light
Noun
Is the brightness that lets you see things. Light comes from sources such as the sun, moon, lamps, and fire.
Example: 'Atom' MS Encarta 2004 In the 17 th century, Isaac Newton was studying the nature of light, he imagined light to be a tiny stream of particles, or corpuscles as they were known. Around the same time a Dutch scientist called Christiaan Huygens believed that light was a wave.
fr: Lumière
The light
Molecule
Noun
Chemistry, Physics. the smallest physical unit of an element or compound, consisting of one or more like atoms in an element and two or more different atoms in a compound.
Example: Antioxidants can prevent oxidation by firstly minimizing free radical's formation; secondly scavenging free radicals mainly through donating their own electron(s) and proton(s) to free radicals to equate the unpaired electrons, while forming a stable molecule or compound.
fr: Molécule
One octane molecule
Research
Noun
The systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.
Example: We are fighting meningitis by raising money for medical research.
fr: Recherche
A research
Ruler
Noun
a straight strip or cylinder of plastic, wood, metal, or other rigid material, typically marked at regular intervals, to draw straight lines or measure distances.
Example: The radius was measured with a micrometer, and the length measured using a ruler.
fr: Règle
Scientist
Noun
A person who is studying or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences.
Example: This equipment is much improved compared to the previous methods at collecting diffraction patterns and is therefore said to be truly capable of small specimen analysis a major criteria of any equipment used by a forensic scientist.
fr: Scientifique
A scientist
Solution
Noun
an act or the process by which a solid, liquid, or gaseous substance is homogeneously mixed with a liquid or sometimes a gas or solid.
Example: Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) were the first to offer a solution to these problems providing a thin and lightweight alternative.
fr: Solution
A glow stick solution

Noun
a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding.
Example: In his book he argued "tissues, organs, organisms and even species originated by the establishment of long term symbiogenesis".
fr: Espèce

swamp
Noun
an area of low-lying, uncultivated ground where water collects; a bog or marsh.
